Media Arts 2 - Introduction to Photography

Students will learn manual photography techniques such as composition, shutter speed, aperture, and focal length, and utilize these principles to create photographs that tell stories. They will utilize both mobile (phone/tablet) and professional equipment throughout the class (DSLR/mirrorless) while learning and creating in many photographic genres I.e landscape, portrait, product, etc. Students will also learn basic photo-editing techniques. The class will be a lecture/practice/critique model. Students will be expected to complete assignments outside of class time based on the topic of the week, then take part in instructor-led peer critique. Equipment will be provided by the school, but students may also bring in their own.

The class will be structured in two parts:

Lecture 30 min

Critique 60-80 min (20 min intervals of groups of 3-4 students)

Once students are finished with their critique time they are dismissed from class. 

Course Time Frame: 18-22 weeks (1 Trimester)

90 minutes weekly

Course FAQs

What are my technology needs?

You will log in to Google Classroom and utilize this platform for work submission. You will also need to be proficient in the use of Google Drive, including, GoogleSlides, and GoogleDocs. Other programs we will use include Snapseed.

Students are requested to use their own phones/tablets and DSLR/mirrorless cameras. Some equipment will be provided by WCS.

What are the prerequisites I need in order to take this class?

None.

How do you grade my work in this class?

Wahtonka Community School uses a proficiency-based grading system. Your grade is based upon rubrics with specific standards and requirements. In order to gain credit for this class, you must meet these standards at the proficient or mastery level. 

Course grades are usually broken down as follows:

Mastery

Letter = A+, A, A-

GPA = 4.0, 3.75, 3.5

Credit = 0.33

Proficient

Letter = B+, B, B-

GPA = 3.25, 3.0, 2.75

Credit = 0.33

Developing 

Letter = C+, C, C-

GPA = 2.5, 2.0, 1.75

Credit = 0.15 - 0.05

Basic/Emergent

Letter = D, F

GPA = 1.5, 0
